Sovereignty and service: Continuity of our mission
Together, we have made tremendous progress in our mission to enhance the overall quality of life of the Chickasaw people. That mission of service remains as we continue to add to the Chickasaw Nation’s rich history of solidarity, self-determination and progress.
In the 1960s, our predecessors gathered at places like Seeley Chapel in a move to preserve our tribal government. Today, as we enter a new chapter, we do so in unity, as one tribe with one mission. Our goals remain the same. We will continue working every day to preserve our culture, expand opportunities and strengthen the sovereignty of our people.
One of the pillars of our sovereignty is the Chickasaw Nation Constitution. In 1983, leaders, with much input from citizens, created a new constitution that would support a revitalized government. They dedicated much time, thought and passion into creating this document that is the basis from which we operate today. The Chickasaw Constitution, created by the people and for the people, is the foundation of our modern government.
Within our Constitution is Article XV (15) Section 1, which states that in the case of resignation of the Governor, the Lt. Governor shall immediately become Governor for the remainder of the unexpired term. The Constitution states that the Governor then appoints a Lt. Governor for the remainder of the unexpired term. This process was established to maintain a stable and strong government, and it has been closely followed.
After serving the tribe for 51 years, including nearly four decades fulfilling the duties of the Office of the Governor, Bill Anoatubby retired as one of the greatest leaders in the history of the Chickasaw Nation.
Throughout his time in office, Governor Bill Anoatubby provided visionary leadership that transformed the Chickasaw Nation and positively impacted the lives of generations of Chickasaw citizens. His dedication, values and unwavering commitment to our people have strengthened our tribe in countless ways. The progress we enjoy today is a direct result of his leadership and the hard work of many devoted Chickasaw citizens and Chickasaw Nation employees who believed in a brighter future.
We are especially grateful for Governor Anoatubby’s guidance and mentorship. His example has helped shape my own understanding of leadership and public service. The values that have guided him throughout his tenure, integrity, accountability, strategic planning and a steadfast dedication to the Chickasaw people, will continue to guide me as we move forward together.
Our leadership has long planned for the future. Many of the initiatives and priorities that will guide our work in the coming years have been thoughtfully developed over time. We have a strong foundation, clear direction and a committed and talented team dedicated to serving the Chickasaw people.
While we honor our past and celebrate our achievements, we are also focused on the future. The coming years present tremendous opportunities for the Chickasaw Nation. We will continue investing in our people, strengthening our communities and ensuring that future generations inherit a Chickasaw Nation that is even stronger, more prosperous and better prepared to meet the challenges ahead.
The Chickasaw story has always been one of resilience, determination and progress. That story continues because of the strength of our people. It is a tremendous honor and privilege to serve you and together, we will continue to build upon the remarkable legacy that has brought us to this point.
Together, we will continue moving forward with confidence, purpose and optimism to a future rich with possibilities and filled with opportunities.
